TIME TO SMELL THE COFFEE!

September 20, 2024

Recent research has indicated that drinking coffee can counteract the detrimental health effects of prolonged sitting. So, consume coffee! And why not, since, according to experts, coffee is not only delicious but a “miracle compound”.

Even a few years back, the prevailing belief was that prolonged sitting was a relatively benign activity. However, scientific research has since revealed that extended periods of chair-bound sedentary lifestyle pose a huge health risk that is comparable to that of smoking. While it is likely that you are familiar with the prevailing admonitions regarding the perils of prolonged sitting, if you are employed in an office environment, you may still encounter challenges in adhering to recommended regular intervals of standing and movement.

Sitting at the desk for long hours is detrimental to one’s health
Prolonged sitting unequivocally affects blood flow, blood sugar levels and various other biological processes. Given the genuinely alarming data, comparing sitting to the health risks of smoking is not an exaggeration. Extended periods of sitting significantly increase the risk of diabetes by 112 per cent and the risk of heart attack and stroke by 147 per cent. In summary, individuals who sit for long periods can anticipate a shorter lifespan compared to those who engage in regular physical activity.

Today, scientists have suggested an easy complementary solution to alleviate this problem: increasing your coffee intake! Here is the claim: “One effective way to counteract the negative effects of prolonged sitting is to move more, and you might not need to move as much as you think to see a difference. The new way forward is to consume more coffee!”

Increased coffee consumption helps, reckon experts
Is coffee truly a miraculous compound? How exactly can coffee help prevent all of this? Although scientists aren’t certain yet, a comprehensive new study published in BMC Public Health demonstrates a clear link between increased coffee consumption and a reduction in the negative impacts associated with excessive sitting.
Researchers discovered that people who regularly drink coffee and spend six or more hours sitting each day are 1.58 times less likely to die from any cause compared to those who don’t drink coffee. The caffeine in coffee seems to offset the negative effects of sitting for long periods. Although there has been speculation about the antioxidants and other compounds in coffee, it’s still not clear why or how coffee has these effects. Nevertheless, these initial findings have excited the scientists.

Coffee and good health
Can coffee help you stay slim? The findings unequivocally support previous research linking coffee consumption to better health outcomes, such as a reduced risk of Parkinson’s and certain types of cancer. Coffee might also play a role in helping you maintain a healthy weight. While the average person tends to gain weight as they age—about a pound per year through middle age—avid coffee drinkers seem to experience less age-related weight gain. Scientific American boldly highlighted new research indicating that caffeine can indeed slightly boost metabolism, helping you stay a bit slimmer.

Enjoy the brew, but in moderation
It is important to remain composed. Nevertheless, the most recent findings merely indicate a correlation. Further research is imperative to validate this connection and potentially ascertain its underlying causes. Therefore, what is the key point for health-conscious entrepreneurs in the interim? It is essential to avoid over-interpreting these new discoveries. Your morning espresso should not be viewed as a fountain of youth or a miraculous weight loss solution. It is not suggested that your visit to Starbucks can substitute for regular exercise. Additionally, it is evident that excessive coffee consumption is possible.

As per scientific data, consuming more than 400 milligrams of caffeine per day might cause difficulty sleeping, increased stress and even anxiety. For reference, a standard shot of espresso contains 60 milligrams of caffeine. If you’re drinking four venti-sized strong drinks a day, you will likely feel wired and have trouble sleeping. Coffee enthusiasts should enjoy their brew in moderation, but they can take comfort in knowing that their morning coffee may help counteract the negative effects of prolonged sitting. Therefore, feel free to pour yourself another cup if you’d like – the latest research strongly suggests that your coffee habit is likely contributing to better health!
