A burning issue anywhere nowadays is one that concerns weight loss programs. All of us are obsessed with maintaining a proper body weight, aren’t we? This is important too, since being overweight increases our risk of contracting many serious health ailments such as diabetes and coronary heart disease. In my opinion, the best way to lose weight and be healthy is by incorporating achievable changes to your diet and physical activity.

Avoid dieting


First and foremost, for those who are looking to shed a few kilos, do not look towards heavy dieting. It is important to note that dieting does not work in the long-term: a fad diet may help you lose the pounds as long as you are sticking to it owing to lowered metabolism in the body. However, the extra pounds quickly creep back in as soon as you resume your normal lifestyle. Besides, dieting can prove to be highly restrictive and lack the much-needed nutritional balance.

 

Eating right is the key


Our eating habits and the lifestyle we follow are actually responsible for how much we weigh. What we eat, when we eat and why we eat therefore becomes critical. It thus becomes imperative to eat clean. By “clean”, I mean avoiding junk, oily food and processed eatables. Consume nutrient-rich eatables like fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains like brown rice, quinoa and oats, lean protein like chicken, fish and legumes; and healthy fats that is sourced from nuts, seeds, avocados and olive oil.
It is also imperative to eat “balanced” meals and snacks. Controlling portion sizes is also important. Try to engage in having three balanced meals and healthy snacks every two-three hours to keep the body energized and healthy.

 

Don’t forget to hydrate yourself


Water does more to your body than just quench your thirst – research suggests that the more hydrated you are, the more efficiently your body works with tasks that range from thinking to losing body fat! Consumption of at least two litres of water daily is advisable. It can suppress your appetite so that you do not over-eat, boost your metabolism and make exercising simpler, all of which can contribute to weighing less in the long-run.

 

Self-discipline and commitment


These two are important factors in your weight-loss journey. To be successful in looking trimmer, stay motivated and follow certain guidelines like setting realistic goals, maintaining a food diary to track your food intake, sleeping well as well as making sure to interact with friends and family who encourage you towards your goal. Also, not to forget, make time to stay active and indulge in some form of exercise for at least 30-45 minutes a day. It could be running, yoga, playing a sport or simply a brisk walk and you could very soon see a much leaner version of yourself!
