Maximize Your Workouts

February 12, 2025

In today’s times, working out in some form or the other has become essential for all age groups. It significantly reduces the risk of chronic diseases, improves bone density, builds muscle mass, perks up energy levels, enhances mental well-being and contributes holistically to a happier and healthier life. However, it is very important to eat the right food and avoid the wrong ones before a workout to derive the maximum benefit from it.

What should you NOT eat immediately before an exercise session?

Granola and protein bars

Surprised? While I know these are highly recommended nowadays, they are not advisable to be consumed immediately before a workout. The reason being, some of them might contain exceedingly high levels of calories and artificial sugars. In that case, you will not be able to make the most of your workout. So please check the label in case you decide to have one but they are best avoided prior to your workout!

Veggies with high fiber content

Yes, fiber is very important for the smooth functioning of our body but consuming them just before a workout is not advisable. Common veggies like broccoli, Brussels sprouts and cauliflower are hard to digest and could hamper the intensity of your workouts. It is thus advisable to stick to vegetables that are easier on your body such as potatoes and well-cooked asparagus.

High-fat food and junk food

Food like red meat, beans and the like that are fat-rich take a long time to digest, resulting in stomach discomfort and a sluggish feeling even before you kick-off your exercise regimen. Ditto with junk food and fried food which are always tempting but a bad idea to eat before your workout!

Energy drinks

Consuming energy drinks are a fad these days, especially for youngsters who are of the opinion that these will provide a pre-workout boost. But in reality, their high sugar and caffeine content can mess up your exercise by making you feel jittery as well as spiking up your heart rate and blood pressure.

What should you eat before a workout?

Below are a few simple suggestions:

  • It is important to finish eating at least 1.5 -2 hours before starting to exercise
  • Choose food and beverages that are easily digestible
  • Stick to healthy food options like fruits, muesli and Greek yoghurt
  • Smoothies with coconut water, frozen banana, peanut butter and plant proteins are recommended
  • Oats with banana, milk and honey is proven to be a good energy booster prior to any workout session
  • Always bear in mind the fact that proper hydration before, during and after a workout is vital
